The Voice We Know, the Face We Long to See

One of my favorite Facebook reels captures a moment that always brings tears to my eyes. A baby—not yet a year old—receives a tiny pair of glasses for the first time. Initially, the infant displays a quiet curiosity as the blurry world comes into focus. Then, those precious baby eyes widen with wonder. A smile slowly spreads across the child's face, followed by delighted laughter.

Yet the sweetest moment is yet to come.

As the baby's vision clears, he suddenly realizes that the warm, familiar voice he has loved since birth belongs to the beautiful face leaning over him. His mother gently speaks to him, and in that moment, he truly sees her. Instinctively, his tiny hand reaches up to touch her face, making sure that his eyes are showing him a tangible reality: He recognizes her!

Long before he ever saw her clearly, he knew her voice. He had been comforted, soothed, and loved by it. Now, the voice and the face become one in a moment of recognition, love, and indescribable joy. Every time I watch one of these videos, my heart melts. Yet in these scenes, my thoughts are drawn to a far greater reunion that awaits every child of God.

A Similarly Wonderful Experience Followers of Jesus will one day experience something wonderfully similar. Throughout our lives, we have learned to recognize the voice of our Good Shepherd. Some have known His voice since childhood. Others first heard it later in life when He lovingly called them to Himself. Though we have never seen His face, we have come to know His heart.

One day, faith will become sight: The Savior whose voice has comforted us in our darkest nights, guided us through life's uncertainties, and whispered peace to our anxious hearts will suddenly come into clear view. We will behold the face of the One who has loved us from before the foundation of the world. As the hymn so

beautifully declares, "We shall behold Him, face to face in all of His glory."

The apostle Paul anticipated that glorious day when he wrote, "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known" (1 Corinthians 13:12, KJV). How fitting that Paul speaks of seeing "face to face." What is now dim will become perfectly clear. The One, whom we have known by faith, we will know by sight.

A Promise Comes to Life Jesus Himself promised, "My sheep hear

My voice, and I know them, and they

follow Me" (John 10:27). That promise

comes beautifully to life in the

resurrection account when, on the morning of the resurrection,

Mary Magdalene wept outside the empty tomb. She had come expecting to anoint the body of her Lord only to find the stone rolled away. Looking into the empty tomb, she saw angels, yet grief overwhelmed her heart. Although Jesus was standing nearby, she did not recognize Him. Supposing Him to be the gardener, she pleaded with Him to explain where Jesus’ body had been taken. Her vision had become clouded by tears.

Then Jesus spoke one word, Mary.

In an instant, everything changed. She knew that voice. The Shepherd had called one of His own by name. The One who had forgiven, restored, and loved her beyond measure now stood alive in her presence. She had mistaken His appearance, but she could never mistake His voice. Recognition turned sorrow into joy.

Our First Moments in Heaven I wonder—in heaven, will we experience a moment of recognition as Mary did? Perhaps, He will simply speak our names. Then, after a lifetime of walking by faith, we will finally see the face we have longed for. The voice that has communicated through His Word, comforted us by His Spirit, and faithfully led us on life’s journey, will welcome us home.

In that instant, each question will fade, each burden will fall away, each sorrow will be swallowed up in joy. The face we have imagined through the pages of Scripture will no longer be a veiled abstraction. Faith will give way to sight. Hope will be fulfilled in His presence.

Yet there is another thought that makes this reunion even sweeter: Like the little child whose mother had lovingly gazed upon him from birth, our Savior has been looking upon us all along. Though we have seen Him dimly, He has always seen us perfectly. Every tear, every prayer, every victory, every failure, every quiet act of faith has been known to Him. We have never once been outside His loving gaze.

Paul reminds us that one day, we "shall know even as also I am known." We will not be meeting a stranger. We will behold the face of the One who has known us completely, loved us perfectly, and kept us faithfully throughout our lives.

Until That Day

In the waiting, we continue listening for His voice through His Word and His Spirit. We follow where our Shepherd leads, trusting the One we do not yet see. Then, with each passing day, our longing grows stronger. One glorious day the voice we know so well will become the face we have longed for. When we see Him ... we will recognize Him instantly because the heart always recognizes the One it has already learned to love.
